The Scraggly Rose Bush

I took another look at my scraggly rose bush the other day. What a sight! There was some new growth because the temperature had fluctuated so much. Isn’t it a shame that the weather isn’t a steady 74 degrees every day? Then, perhaps the roses would bloom all year long. If this were so, would we appreciate and admire the rose if there were not a dormant season of anticipation?

We will all look a bit scraggly and worn at times because we too, as Christians, go through many seasons. We can be cold and distant, a season of waiting, growing and going, a season of planning, out for fun, a season of ease, or reaping many blessing, a season to bloom. Each season could last a day or for some what feels like an eternity. All we are to do in every season is abide in Him and only Him especially the times when we feel we have it all under control.

People may say they understand where you are. Have you notice when your winter is approaching and they feel that first gust of chill in the air they are loading up their RV and heading south. This is neither right nor wrong, our seasons must mesh. Please do not mistake a changing season as a fair weather friend. They too will go in and out of season. Perhaps they and you are not in the same one. If you expect them to wait on you, should not you do the same?

Remember no one can know or understand the heart so don’t try, it will expend your growth energy in a way that is non-productive or bloom related. God enjoys all your seasons, He ordains each and every one. He feels that any time spent with His creation is a wonderful time whether He is holding you, guiding you, or protecting you. Don’t make lists or harbor another’s season against them. We all have them and remember each step of our life is ordained. Even if you are distant for awhile just give love. Then, when seasons mesh again you will both enjoy the blossoms of that time.

My scraggly rose bush will bloom its beautiful pink buds again in its proper season. And it must accept that not everyone likes pink or a rose with low fragrance. This is ok, perhaps the season they are in disables them from appreciating the lack of scent or the pink color because their perspective is skewed. Depending on your own season, your perspective too can be altered and you won’t be able to appreciate those who can’t enjoy your blossoms. Just hang in there.

One may look at my rose bush and say why isn’t it red? It doesn’t match your bricks. Or they may say it doesn’t smell good enough for them to accept it as a rose. But as Shakespeare posed, "what’s in a name doesn’t a rose by any other name smell as sweet?" The rose petals and the thorned branches are enough to call it a rose.

The blood of Christ is enough for those who accept HIM to call themselves a Child of God. Since we all walk in and out of different seasons during our lives, there may be times when our blooms are hidden from plain site. Just the same as my rose bush that hides behind my RV. We can not always see it right away you have to look for it, or smell for it. Maybe if people would take the time to wait and look they too would see your blooms too. Sometimes sight is not enough. Perhaps if they would close their eyes and rely on the scents, then they would locate the most fragrant rose of all (your gift or talent). If people had just taken the time look around they would see my RED and very FRAGRANT bush and discover its hiding place. It was just waiting to be noticed.

If your perspective is skewed due to a season you find yourself in, then perhaps you need to rely on another sense to appreciate the beauty around you. Pull back look or sniff for the hiding rose bush.

Learn to appreciate the scraggly one in plain sight that will bloom faithfully. Even if it is not to your preference, it is in a league of its own and requires not only depth of sight to see it but also depth of heart to appreciate it.

Don’t just stop to smell the roses, seek them out as you seek out the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. We are all His creation and He gave His Rose for your salvation.
